Get to know the basics of our innovative brain health platform.
Millions of people across North America live with the long-term neurological effects of health conditions, face cognitive decline as they age, or struggle with experiencing brain fog and anxiety that hinders them from performing at their very best. Our proprietary Brain Enhance and Recovery System (BEARS) is a research-based program that may help people address their individual cognitive challenges and enhance their brain health.
BEARS fills the gap between what traditional cognitive programs offer and what individuals truly need. While programs in the past have typically used compensatory strategies to help participants cope with their limited capacities after injury or illness, BEARS focuses instead on increasing capacities through neuroplastic programming, providing a way for anyone to improve their brain health. The goal is to help participants improve their overall quality of life long-term, instead of helping people simply accept their circumstances and live within their reduced capacities.
Neuroplasticity, the science BEARS is based on, is the brain’s ability to change and adapt. Through specific actions, the brain is able to generate new neurons and make new connections. This means that people are able to learn, or re-learn, new skills and strengthen cognitive capabilities. BEARS takes advantage of the brain’s neuroplasticity to help participants target their cognitive deficits to improve their capacities.
How does BEARS work?
The BEARS Program is a four-pillar approach to brain health:
Cardio Program – Backed by thorough research, BEARS includes programmatic exercise and tracked physical activity to regulate mood and anxiety. This aerobic exercise program plays a vital role in stimulating brain health and may improve mood and executive functioning.
Cognitive Training – Using the world-renowned BrainEx™ program, BEARS targets four areas of the brain that are responsible for executive functioning. Four exercises – Symbol Thinking, Symbol Relations, Non-verbal Thinking and Predicative Speech – help to increase an individual’s ability to organize, plan and set goals, in addition to strengthening capacities in verbal memory, verbal retrieval, reasoning and enhancing overall self-awareness.
Mindfulness Curriculum – An integral part of BEARS is guided mindfulness exercises aimed to reduce the risk of chronic symptoms of stress, fatigue and pain in people who live with the long-lasting effects of brain injury or other cognitive difficulties. These 10-15 minute daily meditation exercises can increase energy levels and help people who suffer from chronic conditions live better.
Progress Tracking – BEARS-certified providers have access to our fully-automated tools to analyze and report real-time participant activity and satisfactory tracking. This “quality of life” tracking system allows facilitators to monitor changes in each individual’s daily life throughout program participation. Through this digital progress tracking, the quality of care is greatly improved.
